I have been playing jazz for many years, mostly on vibes and more recently on tenor, but have always wanted to learn to read music and play guitar like the jazz greats. I am now 72 years of age and think it's about time I learned. LOL I have a jazz trio with Hammond B3 organ and drums and myself on vibes and tenor. I would like to be able to take over the chording in guitar to let the organ do some solo melody stuff.

Hi, everyone, I found a fantastic little app (application - program) for the iPod Touch. It is called iHarmony and gives just about everything you need to know about scales, chords and harmonies.
With this app you'll never be stuck for finding the notes for any scale or chord.

A few words about my progress.

Hi everyone. Thanks to those who replied to my first blog. Well, having started the course and gotten through the reading and chords I came down with a bout of shingles. (Painful in the extreme) which set me back over the whole month of July. Now I am able to start over and I am going back to square one. My reading is still not great in spite of completing the first lessons. I make it a practice to go back to the beginning at the start of every session and go over all the reading exercises.
I also found that my hard earned calluses had softened up, so it is back to endless fingering while sitting down reading or watching tv. I have also been strumming over chord changes of jazz standards in my "Real Book" as a break from the course. It gives me some idea how I might sound if I ever get through all Steve's course. LOL
Once I get through the scales I hope to be able to read and improvise on the standards. Probably use "Band in a Box" for piano, bass and drums backing.
So now it is back to the toil. My 75th birthday is coming up in a few days, so maybe I'll buy myself a new guitar or something. (Wife permitting)
On another subject.....I have been browsing through some of the blogs and would like to say to some of the beginners, as a lifetime jazz musician, performing since I was 16, there is no greater joy or self satisfaction than in creating music and performing for others. Whether strumming 3 chords around a campfire for a sing along or performing on stage with other musicians, the hours of practice and pain are worth it, so keep practicing.
