I began playing guitar in my early 20's with the hope of being able to play a few songs around the camp fire. I accomplished that goal within a few years and got really bored with my playing over the next few years. I took some lessons from an accomplished friend and progressed - got stuck for lack of practice time. The baby arrived and over time I quit all together. In my early 40's my new wife bought me a guitar and got me lessons with an extremely accomplished jazz instructor. I got stuck and quit. For the next 8 years I practiced sporadically, watched video traning tapes, and made only minor progress. At some point my downstairs condo neighbor asked if I was "still trying to learn to play the guitar". I thought that was really funny until I realized how true it was. I was trying to learn rather than learning. I sold my business and moved from the city to the country. I found a respected guitar instructor 5 minutes away from my house and began lessons again. He assumed I knew something about guitar theory and for a while I had him fooled... I continued with the lessons for over a year - 1/2 hour every other week. I progressed some - practiced a lot of chords and scales - got stuck and frustrated. My instructor was frustrated too. In December 2008 I was looking for alternatives to private lessons and stumbled on LLS Learn and Master Guitar. It sounded like Steve did not assume I knew anything about music theory. In fact - he assumed at the very least a review from step one would benefit most intermediate players. I accepted Steve's advise and began again at the beginning. So I am now on the path of starting over from the beginning - and learning basic things I skipped in the past. |
